Het nieuwe jaar is nog maar net begonnen, maar ik heb me alweer in een nieuw avontuur gestort. Hoe kan het ook anders hoor ik jullie denken. Sinds afgelopen zaterdag ben ik in Parijs en hier zal ik tenminste tot eind mei blijven om te studeren.
Het heeft heel veel moeite gekost om alles te regelen, maar het is nu allemaal wel soort van goed gekomen. Ik had me vorig jaar rond februari al aangemeld voor het Erasmus programma en was daar ook voor uitgekozen. Daarna moest er echter wel nog veel gebeuren. Het lastige van Frankrijk is dat de Fransen nog wat moeite lijken te hebben met de moderne communicatiemiddelen. Na lang heen en weer mailen en zelfs skypen (in het Frans!) zijn we het eindelijk eens geworden over de vakken die ik hier ga volgen. Het zijn drie mastervakken en daarna ga ik nog een korte stage doen. Vervolgens kon er via de universiteit woonruimte voor me geregeld worden, maar toen ik een bevestiging kreeg, bleek dat ik daar pas in februari in zou kunnen terwijl m’n vakken al in de week van 4 januari begonnen. Daarna hadden ze dan voor de hele periode wat anders geregeld op een campus, maar begin december bleek dat ik daar ook pas half januari in zou kunnen in verband met het uitlopen van renovaties. Gelukkig heb ik voor de eerste twee weken via airbnb wat weten te vinden, dus daar ben ik nu en 16 januari ga ik dan naar de campus waar ik de rest van de tijd door zal brengen.
Ik heb de kerstvakantie met m’n ouders en zusje in ons huis in Zuid-Frankrijk doorgebracht en afgelopen zaterdag zijn we teruggereden naar Nederland met een tussenstop in Parijs, waar ik gedropt werd. Ik zit nu in een heel schattig oud pand en woon met twee andere studenten. Het nadeel van het oude pand is dat het heel slecht geïsoleerd is dus het is een beetje frisjes, maar verder is het wel leuk.
Maandag had ik gelukkig nog geen college, anders had ik niet geweten waar ik wanneer had moeten zijn. Daar kun je namelijk pas bij als je inloggegevens hebt en als dat is ingesteld voor je en blijkbaar vonden ze het moeilijk dat vast te doen. Ik was wel al naar de universiteit gegaan om onder andere dat te regelen. De universiteit is heel apart ingedeeld: op de begane grond zijn er allerlei torens waar je in kunt en op de hogere verdiepingen tussen de torens zijn gangen waar lokalen zijn. Verder is er een pleintje met in het midden een hoge toren waar voornamelijk medewerkers zitten. Het hele gebied is omheind en er is nu maar één ingang open waar bewaking staat om je tas te checken, waarschijnlijk naar aanleiding van de aanslagen van 13 november.
Vandaag had ik dan m’n eerste echte collegedag. Ik had maandag een briefje gekregen met m’n rooster daarop voor de komende week, want het kan even duren voor ik op die site kan. Daar stond op dat ik op dinsdag om 8.30 uur begon, dus ik was netjes om 8.30 uur bij het juiste lokaal en toen was er helemaal niemand! Ik dacht al dat ik foute informatie had gekregen of zoiets, maar toen ik het aan een meneer die daar liep vroeg zei hij dat de les misschien pas om 9.00 uur begon en dat bleek inderdaad zo te zijn. Ik was me al helemaal dood geschrokken. Vandaag had ik uiteindelijk drie colleges van 1.5 uur. Tussen de eerste twee keer 1.5 uur hadden we een kwartiertje pauze en rond de lunch 1 uur en 15 minuten. Het is dus allemaal wat anders ingedeeld dan bij ons. Ik heb gelukkig wel gelijk een vriendin gemaakt! De eerste docent vroeg aan het eind van de les wie de Erasmus student was om nog even te zeggen dat ik alles mocht vragen, ook in het Engels en naar aanleiding daarvan begon het meisje (A) naast me tegen me te praten. Ik heb vaak gehoord dat Fransen nogal moeilijk zijn om in eerste instantie mee in contact te komen, maar zij heeft me al aangeboden om met van alles te helpen en ik heb ook met haar en wat vrienden van haar de lunchpauze doorgebracht. Dat was dus allemaal erg fijn.
Het Frans valt me ook nog wel mee. Het is natuurlijk best zwaar om de hele dag Frans te horen en te spreken, maar ik heb al van meerdere mensen gehoord dat ze vinden dat ik het echt goed spreek. Dat is natuurlijk altijd leuk om te horen. Verder waren de colleges ook behoorlijk goed te volgen. De eerste was een beetje lastig, maar dat was meer vanwege de stof. Ik versta ook niet altijd letterlijk wat ze zeggen, maar ik begrijp wel gewoon waar het over gaat.
Al met al gaat het dus best goed. Ik hoop dat ik bij de andere lessen ook wat vrienden kan maken, want A volgt verder niet dezelfde vakken als ik. Ik denk dat het na deze eerste week ook allemaal makkelijker wordt, dan weet ik hoe het werkt. Ik hou jullie op de hoogte!
So I decided to write my blog in both Dutch and English since I’m starting to have more and more international friends. I don’t know if you are interested in reading this, but if you are please let me know in some way (like, comment, message, etc.). Because if no one is reading this, then I won’t spend the time on this anymore ;)
The New Year just began but I already started a new adventure. Last Saturday I arrived here in Paris and I will stay here at least until the end of May to study.
It took a lot of effort to get everything sorted, but it has kind of all fallen together now. Last February I applied for the Erasmus exchange program and was selected for that. However, after that still a lot had to be done. A disadvantage of France is that the French seem to have a little trouble with the modern forms of communication. After much back and forth e-mailing and even skyping (in French!) we’ve finally agreed on which courses I was going to follow: three master courses and I will do a short research internship. The university could organize a room for me, but when I received the confirmation it turned out that I could only move in there at the beginning of February while my courses would start in the week of the 4th of January. So I asked them if there were any other possibilities and they found me another room for the whole period. However, at the beginning of December I received an e-mail that I could only move into that room mid January due to renovations. Luckily I found a room myself on airbnb for the first two weeks, so that’s where I am now and I while move on 16th of January to the campus where I will stay for the rest of my time here.
During the Christmas break I went to our house in France with my parents and sister. Last Saturday we went back to Holland with and on the way they dropped me off in Paris. I’m currently in a very cute old building and live with two other students. The disadvantage of the old building is that is badly insulated, making it pretty cool in here, but besides that it’s really nice.
Monday I fortunately didn’t have any classes yet, otherwise I wouldn’t have known where to go. You need to have some account to get access to the timetables on a specific website and apparently they couldn’t do already set up the account. Therefore, I already went to the university on Monday so that and some other things would get sorted out. The set-up of the university is very interesting: on the ground level there are multiple towers, which you can enter and on the higher levels there are corridors between the towers, where the classrooms are located. Furthermore, there is a small square with a huge tower in the middle where the offices of employees are. The whole area is fenced and only entrance is open where security checks your bag, probably due to the attacks in November.
Today I had my first real day of college. On Monday they gave me a paper with my timetable for the coming week on it, because it can take some time before I get access to the site. It said that my first class started at 8.30 am but when I got there right on time no one was there! I was already thinking that the information they gave me was wrong, but when I asked someone he told me that the class possibly only started at 9.00 am, which turned out to be true. I had already had a heart attack by then. Today I had three classes of each 1.5 hours. Between the first two courses we had a 15-minute break and during lunch we had 1 hours and 15 minutes. So it’s a little bit different than at the University of Amsterdam. Fortunately, I have already made a friend! The first teacher asked at the end who the Erasmus student was to tell me that I could always go to him if I didn’t understand something and we could also talk in English then. Consequently, the girl next to me started talking to me. I have often heard it said that the French can be a bit difficult to get to know in the beginning, but she has already offered to help me with all kinds of things and I’ve also spent the lunch break with her and some of her friends. So that was all very nice.
The language barrier is also not as bad as I expected. Of course, it’s pretty intensive to hear and speak French all day, but several people have already told me that I speak it really well, which is always nice to hear. Besides that, I could follow today’s classes pretty well. The first was a bit harder, but that was probably more because of the content. I don’t understand always literally understand what they are saying, but I do understand the message.
Altogether, it’s going pretty well. I hope I will also make some friends at the other classes, because A doesn’t follow the same courses as I do, except for this one. I think it will all get easier after this first week, then I know how everything works around here. I will keep you posted!
